Real Surplus of £40,000,000

Analysis by Mr Holland

An assertion that the real surplus in, the public accounts is almost £40,000,000 and not £1,254,000, as stated by the Acting Minister of Finance, Mr D. G. Sullivan, on Monday, is contained in a statement issued from Dargaville, the principal centre in the new Hobson electorate, by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr S. G. Holland.

" It would be safe to say that the public would interpret the surplus of £1,254,000, as announced, to mean that, after all Government payments are subtracted from all Government receipts, " there is a credit balance or surplus of £1,254,000," said Mr Hol'and. " That is far from the facts, as many accounts are not included in the figures as published by Mr Sullivan. Those not included are the railways, post office, coal mines, electric supply account, broadcasting, State forests, some accounts of the Internal Marketing Department and the housing account, to mention a few."
