PARITY REJECTED

THE CONGRESS PARTY OBDURATE MAJORITY (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, June 14. Reuter’s Delhi correspondent says it is understood that the Congress Working Committee has sent a letter to the Viceroy rejecting the principle of parity with the Moslem League. The renewed attempts to effect a compromise between the Congress Party and the Moslem League appear to have got nowhere, says the New Delhi correspondent of The Times. The Viceroy, Lord Wavell, saw Mr Jinnah this morning. The meeting was apparently cordial and constructive, but any hope emerging from it was dashed when the Viceroy received Mr Nehru, who professed inability to carry the Congiess Working Committee with him on the suggested compromise. Evidently, says the correspondent, progress is blocked by an obdurate majority on the committee, who are not prepared to maxe the slightest concession on the issue of parity of representation on the Viceroy's Cabinet, even if a formula is devised which in effect would give Congress a majority, while assuring the Moslems adequate representation.

The Congress Working Committee ended its session with the comment by Dr Azad: “We are still where we were.”
