City Engineer’s Staff A return prepared by the city engineer (Mr S. G. Scoular) to show the position of the technical staff under his control at the present date as compared with 1938 indicates that in 1938 there were 22 members o.' the technical staff and that at the present time the staff numbers 20, including one member who has already submitted his resignation. Works Authorised

Among matters in which the city engineer has been instructed to act are the following:— The construction of kerbing and guttering and footway paving in Carson street, from Appold street to Kevin street, the rounding of the corner of Glen avenue and Carson street, including kerbing and guttering and paved footway and thg completion of widening, kerbing and guttering and footway paving on the south side of the street, from Glen avenue to Aylmer street. These works are estimated to cost £835.

The construction of kerbing and guttering and the paving of footways in Beechworth street and Kelvin road, at an estimated cost of £235, for which provision has been made in the current year’s allocations. The widening of Gladstone road where arrangements have been made with the property owner to cut back a bank, the estimated cost being £226.’ The widening of the formation of Walton street on the frontage of the council’s property, where the dwellings from Highgate are being re-erected, in order to permit the fen'es being constructed at the correct line and level. The estimated cost is £l5O. Transit Housing The Finance Committee will report that the transit housing centre at Tomahawk is now fully occupied by returned servicemen and their families —a total of 12 families. A committee of residents has been set up to control the operation of the camp under rules prepared by the council, and the committee has submitted several suggestions for the better operation of the camp.

With a view to providing more accommodation il suggests that the recreation hall be subdivided into three units, and states that the dining room will afford ample space for recreational purposes It also suggests that the rentals be adjusted on the basis of the area occupied, not, as at present, on the basis of rooms occupied. Under this proposal the gross return to the council will not be affe ted. Both these suggestions have been approved, and arrangements are being made accordingly. A number of minor requests have also received attention. No caretaker has yet been appointed, the residents preferring to arrange to carry out these duties themselves on a roster system, and the chairman of the Camp Committee has undertaken to be responsible for the operation of the scheme.
