PROPOSALS FOR INDIA

CONGRESS DISCUSSION BREAKDOWN PREVENTED (Rec. 9 p.m.) BOMBAY. June li. Mr Gandhi prevented a breakdown in the negotiations to-day by persuading the Congress Working Committee to delay sending a reply to the British Mission’s proposals, says the New Delhi correspondent of the Daily Express. The reply would have been a refusal to accept the plans for an interim Government. The Congress spokesman said Mr Gandhi appealed to the committee to “ sleep on it.” The spokesman added that Congress would be thankful to accept an honourable compromise, but Mr Jinnah is apparently adamant. Mr Gandhi, after conferring with the Viceroy. Viscount Wavell. said: “We are exploring every avenue to avoid a breakdown, but if the negotiations break down it is God’s will.” The possibility of a breakdown over the Congress demand for majority representation in the interim Government is freely conceded everywhere.
