OBITUARY

MR C. B. SINEL (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 10. The death has occurred of Mr Clarence Babot Sinel, aged 47, president of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association and a pjember of the Economic Stabilisation Commission. Mr Sinel was born at Auckland, and went to the first World War at the age of 18. He subsequently became manager of the Prestige Millinery, and later managing director of M.K. Manufacturers. He also joined the directorate of the Colonial Ammunition Company, and was chairman of the district executive of the Rehabilitation Loans Committee.

MR D. E. HOSTE

The death has occurred of Mr D. E. Hoste, a former general director of the China Inland Mission, at the age of 85. Mr Hoste, who was the surviving member of the famous “ Cambridge Seven," went out to China in 1885 and worked in co-operation with Pastor Hsi, the well-known Chinese Christian. After being in turn superintendent of the Shansi and Honan provinces, he was appointed acting general- director of the mission in Shanghai in 1900, and on the death of Dr Hudson Taylor in 1905 he assumed full responsibility. For the first 70 years of the mission’s history there were only two general directors—Dr Hudson Taylor and Mr Hoste, and each held office for a span of 35 years. Mr Hoste had a remarkable grip and knowledge of all phases of the mission work, and until his retirement in 1935 he gave a wonderful example to his fellow-workers. On his retirement, he chose to remain in China, and when the Japanese occupied the country he was interned, together with his wife, in Shanghai. Mrs Hoste died in April, 1944, in Shanghai, and Mr Hoste was repatriated to London about the end of last year.
