CULTURAL RELATIONS
PLANS FOR DEVELOPMENT CANBERRA. June 10. America plans to spend more than £20,000,000 to develop educational and cultural relations with the British Commonwealth of Nations, said the American Charge d’Affaires, Mr John Minter. In the lend-lease agreement signed between Australia and America it was decided that £1,550,000 of Australia’s £8,400,000 debt to America would be used for educational and cultural development. Mr Minter said he thought the money would be used to establish scholarships for American students in Australian universities and for Australian students in American universities. This interchange would provide even closer understanding between the two countries. American libraries in Sydney and Melbourne would probably be enlarged so that students would have easier access to valuable books and* records. Probably the American information bureaux, which proved of such value during the war, would be retained and expanded in British Commonwealth countries.
Canberra is suggesting the establishment of a Department of Pacific Studies at .both Canberra University and an American university to be selected.
