VICTORY CELEBRATIONS

SERVICE AT THE ABBEY

ROYALTY IN CONGREGATION

LONDON, June 9,

Their Majesties, the Princesses, Queen Mary, Princess Royal, and the Earl and Countess of Athlone attended morning service at Westminster Abbey, which was less than half full when they arrived but rapidly filled up as the news spread. The prayers included thanks to God for victory and for the • loyalty and devotion of the British Commonwealth of Nations. In the meantime a crowd of thousands assembled outside and cheered when the Royal party left. Dominion and other troops joined the sightseers or went visiting, leaving the camps almost deserted. Thousands lined the Thames bridges for front seats for the floodlighting display tonight, when buildings and monuments were suddenly bathed in light. The crowds were as dense before the Houses of Parliament as they were yesterday, although it was raining—once again.
