VALIDITY DOUBTED
ITALIAN REFERENDUM ALLEGATIONS OF FRAUD ROME, June 9. The Royalist spokesman said that King Umberto was anxious that no doubts should remain about the validity of the referendum. He wanted the Supreme Court to weigh all the allegations of fraud. The spokesman alleged that the Supreme Court was under Left Wing pressure to hasten the announcement of the Republic. He added that King Umberto would abide by the ruling of the Supreme Court. Umberto yesterday tried to leave Italy without waiting for the official proclamation of a Republic, says the Rome correspondent of the Daily Express. Members of the Government prevented him from joining his wife in Portugal by persuading him that the step might lead to more trouble from Monarchist demonstrators.
The Supreme Court announced that the proclamation would be made at 6 p.m. to-morrow. Umberto will leave within an hour of the reading of it. The Communist leaders ordered their followers to stand by for counterdemonstrations. Queen Marie and her children landed at Lisbon from a cruiser to-day. She was welcomed by Foreign Affairs representatives and the Italian Minister.
