MIDDLE EAST DEFENCE

ARMY BASE IN BRITAIN NEAR THE SUEZ CANAL LONDON. June 9. Britain’s Middle East peace-time army base will be only about 120 miles from the Suez canal, says the Cairo correspondent of the Daily Express. It is in Palestine, south-west of Gaza, where the army recently bought vast tracts as a site for a base, which is reputed to be costing £1,000,000, and begins exactly 10 yards east of the Egyptian frontier. Field-marshal Viscount Montgomery, who has arrived at Malta en route to Cairo, .is expected to arrive at Cairo to-morrow on the first stage of his inspection of Middle East installations
