Gordon Mitchell, who won the Anglican Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club’s Novice Mile Race for the Mouat Cup last Saturday, is the second member of his family to win this race, his brothei’, Fraser, taking the honours some years ago. Gordon is one of the most improved runners in his club, and has been prominent in all runs this season.
A. W. (“Tubby”) Holden is coaching the Mossburn Football Club’s senior and junior teams in the Northern Southland Sub-union’s competitions this season. Holden, who went from Otago Boys’ High School into the University A team, was the Otago half-back in 15 rpatches in the 1926-27-28 seasons and subsequently represented Southland in the 1929-30-32 seasons. He played for the South Island in the 1928-29 seasons and for New Zealand against New South Wales in 1928.
The winner of the Sydney-Hobart yacht race, Captain J. H. Illingworth, has been selected by the Royal Ocean Racing Club of Britain as skipper of its entry in the New York-Bermuda race starting on June 29. His boat will be Latifa, a 53-ton yawl, designed by Willianf Fife, of Fairlie, Clyde. * Jj! N>
American golf professionals certainly play for big money. The former Australian champion, Jim Ferrier, writing from the United States to a Sydney paper, says that purses in the summer .circuit of tournaments will total 400,000 dollars (about £125,000) this year. Chicago’s purse at Tam O’Shanter Golf Club in July will be 45 000 dollars. Ferrier will play throughout the summer circuit from May 9 to the end of October.
Ji: * * The senior Rugby competition in Auckland is being played in two divisions of eight and 12 teams respectively. The second division is being played in two sections and, after the first round, the two leading teams in each section will play off for the right of promotion to the first division. * * *
Twelve teams are taking part in the senior first division of the Wellington Rugby competition, and there are 16 teams in the senior second division.
The Dunedin Civil Service Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club was successful in the teams’ competition in the Kennett Cup steeplechase at Christchurch on Saturday for the tenth time. Its win was well deserved, as its members ran as a team and were able to improve their placings as a result.
