SHIP REPAIRS

Port Chalmers Expansion

HOUSING AT MUSSEL BAY

An industrial undertaking which will have an important effect on the Port of Otago—the extension and expansion of Messrs Stevenson and Cook’s marine

engineering works at Port Chalmers —was announced yesterday by Sir James Fletcher, chairman of directors of Fletcher Holdings, Ltd. The extension of the works will necessitate the augmentation of the staff from its present figure of about 60 to 200. The influx of workers to Port Chalmers which will follow has raised the serious question of housing, and in order to overcome the difficulty 75 State houses will be erected on

reclaimed Harbour Board

land at Mussel Bay, 20 acres of which are available for the purpose, and additional blocks of flats will also be erected in Port Chalmers itself.

The initial moves in the project await the completion of details regarding the acquisition of Mussel Bay by the Housing Construction Department.
