MOUNT BENGER SALE
BETTER DEMAND FOR GOOD SHEEP . The best lines of ewes brought sound competition at the sale held yesterday at Mount Benger, and wethers and lambs also found ready buyers at improved rates. Backward and late-shorn ewes, as well as small two-toothed ewes, met w.ith a slow sale, and realised late values. The entry of approximately 6000 sheep was composed principally of ewes, with a fair number of useful lambs and wethers. The quality on the whole was good, although the percentage of backward ewes was larger than is usually the case at this centre. Outside competition. particularly from Canterbury, helped the market, and the sale had a better tone throughout than the previous one. One draft of exceptionally good four-year-old Corriedale ewes made 27s 7d, the highest price so far recorded, for this breed. Quotations: Extra good four-year Corriedale ewes, 27s 7d; good four-year Corriedale ewes. 21s to 22s 6d: good fiveyear Corriedale ewes. 18s 6d to 20s Id; ordinary, 13s 6d to 15s 6d; backward and late-shorn, from 10s: good two-tooth ewes, 30s; small to medium two-tooth ewes, 20s to 235; fat wethers. 27s to 30s; y.oung store wethers, 25s to 26s 4d; old v.athers, 14s 6d; crossbred ewes and lambs, 16s to 18s: forward lambs, 18s 6d to 20s 9d; medium lambs. 13s 4d to 14s 4d.
