ANNUAL MEETING

The sixty-second annual meeting oi the Otago Chess Club was held on Saturday night, and was largely al tended Mr D. Langley presided. The president, in presenting the annual report., spoke of the club's excellent financial resources and of its bright future prospects with the return from service of several strong playing members. Depleted though it was, the club had won the South Island Championship, but had lost the final match for the Bledisloe Cup by a narrow margin to Wellington. The special winter tournament played last year had proved very successful, and he hoped it would become an annual fixture. An appeal was made to members to subscribe liberally towards the fund being raised to enable the former New Zealand champion, Mr R. G. Wade, to participate in the British Empire Championship, to be held at Nottingham in August next. On behalf of the club, his congratulations were extended to the winners of the annual tournaments— Senior Championship, Mr R. Watt; Junior Championship, Messrs J. S. M Lawson and R. .d’C James (equal). The following officers were elected;— President, Mr D. Langley; vice-presi-dents, Messrs A. E B. Ward (senior) and R. d’C. James (junior); secretary, Mr J. F. Lang; ■ treasurer, Mr G. D. Wright; committee—Mrs R d’C. James, Messrs R. McDermid. J. S. M Lawson, J. McAnsh, H. McGilvary, A. C. Twose and C. C. Cook: solicitor, Mr W. Lana; honorary auditor, Mr W. H. Allen. The Mayor. Mr D. C. Cameron, was introduced by the club’s patron, Mr J. JMarlow, and in declaring the club s sixtythird season open for play Mr Cameron said that the city was proud of its Chess Club and of 'its work in fostering an art which combined mental vigour with recreation. A considerable impetus had, he said, been given to the game during the war years, its popularity with servicemen everywhere being most remarkable. He wished the club every success in its present season and formally made the opening move. P—K 4, in the annual President v. Vice-president match.
