NATIONAL PARTY
PARLIAMENTARY CAUCUS MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN PROPOSED (P.Aj WELLINGTON, Mar. 29. The parliamentary members of the National Party held a fully-attended caucus to-day. Mr Hallyburton Johnstone, the newly-elected member for Raglan, was cordially welcomed. The chairman of the caucus, Mr S. G. Holland, discussing* the business at the luncheon adjournment, said: “We had a discussion on the Raglan byelection and my own tour in various parts of New Zealand. The view caucus takes, looking at the whole position, is that all over New Zealand there is a steady growth in support of the National Party. We have decided to stimulate this further by inaugurating a membership campaign throughout the country.”
Mr Holland added that it had been decided to make a thorough investigation into the housing question and the plans of thg National Party to relieve the situation. Mr Holland said the caucus Ijad set up a special committee, with Mr W. Sullivan as chairman, to complete plans for dealing with this problem on an emergency basis. Another committee would be set up to investigate and report on the recommendations made by the Select Committee which reported last year on local government questions. A preliminary discussion was held by the caucus on the Bretton Woods Agreement, and a special report would be considered at the next meeting of the party in May. Mr Holland added that the preparation of the National Party’s policy for submission to the electors at the next general election was actively in hand.
