ALLEGATIONS RESENTED

RAILWAY SERVANTS DEFENDED

Strong exception has been taken by the chairman of the Otago branch of -the A.S.R.S. (Mr J. W. Bradshaw) to allegations made at the annual conference of the New Zealand Master Carriers’ Federation on Wednesday that there was a lack of discipline among some railway staffs. The statement made at the conference was that this lack of discipline was making it necessary for drivers to undertake a great deal of work that should be done by the railway servants. Mr Bradshow, who made it clear that he could speak only for the Otago staff, said that it had been much below full strength during the war years, and was still in that position. Supervision, however, was as close as it had ever been, and the men, despite long hours and difficult conditions, had several times been commended by the district traffic manager on the manner in which they had coped with their work. At least so far as Otago was concerned, the allegations made at the Carriers’ Conference were completely unfounded and were an unjust reflection on a body of men who had faithfully served both their department and the public.
