UNION ELECTION

AUTOMOBILE WORKERS SETBACK FOR COMMUNISTS NEW YORK. (Rec. 0.45 a.m.) Mar. 27. Walter Reuther defeated R. J. Thomas for the presidency of the United Automobile Workers’ Union in an election interrupted by fist fights, hooting, and other demonstrations. Reuther, who had been U.A.W. vicepresident in charge of unions in the General Motors division, took a leading part in the recent strike.. He told the press that the union under his leadership .would ask for maximum wages increases without price increases, and throughout industry bargaining with equal pay for equal work. The New York Times says Reuther’s election is regarded by some other unions as a definite indication that Right Wing forces within the C. 1.0. will unite to remove Communists from the C.l.OApolicy-making positions.
