PERSIA’S RIGHTS
A JUST SETTLEMENT
FAITH IN UNITED NATIONS
(Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, Mar. 27 One of the things that caused most comment among the excited delegates to the Security Council was the manner of Mr Gromyko’s withdrawal. He sat quietly while M. Bonnet spoke on the Egyptian motion and then slowly stated in Russian that he was no longer able to participate and would therefore leave the meeting. He waited until his remarks were translaied into French and English. He then arose, jerked off his shell-rimmed spectacles, and followed by his aids, walked to the rear of the chamber, past the silent, impassive members and out of the door. Mr Gromyko, without his hat, pushed his way through a throng outside the chamber and told reporters he had nothing to say. Marine guards and police opened a way for him- to his limousine.
Dr Quo Tai. Chi, before calling for a vote on the Egyptian motion that Ala be beard said the council should note it now had only 10 members. Eight voted to hear Hussein Ala. Australia and Poland voted “No.” Ala was then invited to the council table. Dr Quo Tai Chi announced that the council would adjourn till to-morrow, but Mr Byrnes asked that Ala be given a chance to present his views on postponement. Ala declared that Persia had faith in the United Nations and confidently expected to have her rights upheld by the council. Persia wanted her case to remain before the council until a just settlement was reached. He said his Government wanted to press the case at the earliest possible moment. He knew of no agreement—secret or Russia and Persia. Ala began to read a report briefly reviewing the recent visit of Ghavam Sultaneh to Moscow where he unsuccessfully asked for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Persia. Ala said Russia demanded Persia should agree to establish a Russian-Persian oil company, with Russia holding 51 per cent, of the stock.
