THEFT FROM DREDGE

COMPASS REMOVED PLATE-GLASS WINDOWS SMASHED (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar. 27. Thieves broke into the wheelhouse of the New Plymouth Harbour Board’s dredge Paritutu on Monday night and wrenched the compass binnacle from its standard and removed it. A pair of binoculars, part of the dredge’s equipment, are also missing. On Monday afternoon the Paritutu. with the wheelhouse securely locked, was left at her usual mooring alongside the wharf. The thieves smashed the plate glass windows on both sides of the wheelhouse and gained access by unlatching tne door. No attempt was made to dismantle the binnacle. Officials believe that the drastic treatment has ruined the instrument. A sledge hammer, part of the dredge’s equipment, was found near the wheelhouse and it is believed that this was used to effect an entry into the wheelhouse and to remove the compass from its standard.
