APPLES FOR BRITAIN

125,000 CASES ORDERED PLENTY FOR LOCAL MARKETS After a period of uncertainty, when it was thought that no shipping would be available, arrangements have now been made for New Zealand to export 125,000 cases of apples to Britain.-Nel-son’s export quota (says a northern correspondent) is 75,000 cases, and the other 50,000 cases will come from Hawke’s Bay. The packing of Delicious apples for export will commence at orchards immediately, and the first shipment will be loaded about the middle of April. Quantities of each variety required from New Zealand are as follows: Delicious, 40,000; Sturmer, 50,000; Dougherty, 18.000: Rokewood, 2000: Rome Beauty, 10,000; and Statesman. 5000.

The export of 125.000 cases will ease the position on the New Zeal§pd market this year, and it is considered that there will not be a glut of fruit; There will, however, be more apples for the Dublic than there have been during the last few years, when the United States Joint Purchasing Board was buying about 350,000 cases a year for the American troops. It was expected earlier in the season that Britain would be taking 600,000 cases of apples, but that order was cancelled owing to lack of shipping space. New Zealand orchards this season will produce probably over 2.000,000 cases. The Nelson crop is estimated at 1,000,000 cases.
