BOXING

OTAGO ASSOCIATION FORTY-SECOND ANNUAL MEETING The forty-second annual meeting of the Otago Boxing Association was held last night, the president (Mr R. S. Glcndining) being in the chair. Proposing the adoption of the annual report, the president expressed gratification at the conclusion of hostilities, and said that the Boxing Association could do a valuable job in helping the younger people bv promoting a good clean sport. It bad been proved that the promotion of amateur contests had contributed a great deal towards making the public boxingminded. He congratulated the Match Commitiee on the pleasing Results of its labours during the past year. A Successful Year Mr Glendining said that eight professional contests and several amateur contests had been held during the year under review, in addition, the Otago championships bad been held for the first time since 1939. All the tournaments throughout the season had been financially successful, and, considering that the maximum purse was paid for most of the contests, Ihis should be considered highly satisfactory. The gymnasium had been let to no fewer than six instructors during the 1944-45 season, but in the interests of file pupils the executive had now arranged for two trainers only to use the association’s room. All other recognised trainers would receive any assistance pos'•sibie from ilia association to assist them in establishing gymnasiums privately. Boxing gloves and equipment, said the president, had been difficult to procure in recent years, but an improvement »n this respect was anticipated in the coming season. . Although the standard of the amateur contestants had not been exceptionally high, the president said, there had been seme remarkably good bouts, and the encouragement of outside amateurs had been •justified, in that it had added greatly to the interest of many contests. The membership of the association was now full, arid there was a waiting list. The finances were in a healthy state. The motion was seconded by Mi JKilmartin. and carried.
