NATIONAL SAVINGS

TOTAL OF £16,000 LAST WEEK Last week Otago recorded its highest weekly total in national savings investments since before Christmas. It is becoming more and more evident that the movement, which played such an important part in New Zealand's war effort, is being supported by the general public at least to an equal extent in peace-time. An i analysis of the returns shows that the movement is not only engendering a spirit of thrift on the part of the small investor, but is providing an avenue of investment for those persons with larger amounts available who are finding a difficulty in locating suitable avenues of gilt-edged investment showing a return of 3 per cent, for such a short period. Twenty-five offices in the district had weekly quota successes in contributing towards the excellent weekly total ot £16.023 11s Bd, only three offices failing in this direction. The local committee is gratified to be able to report three additional full annual quota successes, these being Middlemarcb. Palmerston, and Port Chalmers. There are' now only six offices in the district which have to reach their objectives before the end of March — namely, Alexandra, Clinton. Kaitangata, Oturehua, Owaka, and Waipahi.
