CROMWELL MEETING
£/\RLIER days recalled In the early days, when the lure ot gold populated Central Otago, it was inevitable that racing would be established. with the result that the "goldfields circuit" drew' patronage from a widespread area. Among the most popular meetings in the circuit were those held at Cromwell, and a relic of their importance ini bygone years can be seen on the racecourse in the shape of a range of loose .boxes to accommodate visiting horses. The loose boxes were built of sun-dried brick and their durability is demonstrated by the fact that they are still in service. The grand stand, containing a commodious refreshment booth, was built of tiie same material and will do useful service at the meeting to be held this week. The records of racing in the early days are incomplete, but lbs Crormvell Derby was a race of importance w'hen it figured on the calendar. One of the most notable wanness of the Cromyvell classic was The Wizard, who afterwards broke down, but on being restored to soundness became the crack trotter of his day. The Wizard stands out as a “horse ih history.” and was probably the only classic winner in the world who also achieved success as a straight-out trotter.
