METROPOLITAN v. MANIOTOTO OUTRIGHT WIN FOR TOWN TEAM’ A good finish was provided at Carisbrook yesterday when the match between Maniototo and a Metropolitan eleven was concluded. After making 241 in its first innings, the town team dismissed Maniototo for 167 in its second knock, and was left with 79 runs to get in an hour. , The best performances of the. day were a ‘sound innings of 57 by L. Watt, who started slowly, but livened up later on and produced some attractive scoring shots, and a bright knock of .56 by R. McSkimming, the former Otago Rugby footballer. A. Moir, the Grange batsman, scored 65 not out in 40 minutes in Metropolitan’s second innings, his total including three 6’s. When play was resumed at 10.30 a.m. Caradus forced the pace from the start, but he became Klitscher's fourth victim when lie touched one from Becker. St John joined Watt, and they carried the score to 202 before Watt was caught on the leg boundary off Blackburn, the siow bowler. He had batted for 155 minutes for a sound 57 runs, which included five 4’s. . St. John, who had batted confidently, was bowled soon afterwards for 33, and the innings ; closed when Freeman, who had made 26 in quick time, gave Klitscher his fifth catch. Macassey was the most Impressive of the seven Maniototo .bowlers ; tried. He got some life out of the wicket, and kept the ball well up to the batsmen. Beckei and Blakely also bowled steadily to take two and three wickets respectively. The ground fielding and returns to the wicket were good throughout. Murray and Mathias opened the country team's second innings after lunch to the bowling of Robertson and Freeman. Mathias was well caught by Watt, whose fielding throughout the match was. .outstanding, and when Macassey was run out and Blakely was caught ip the ' Slips off the first • ball he received, thrfee wickets were down for 22. Beattie joined Murray, and the pair defended stubbornly for over an hour until Murray was bowled by St. John. He had batted foi 105 minutes for a sound 34. Moir took a good catch in the slips soon afterwards to dispose of Beattie, and five wickets were down for 72. Becker was run out when attempting a quick, single, and at the tea adjournment the score was 117 for seven wickets. McSkimming, who was batting confidently, and scoring with hard drives through the off field, carried the along at a brisk rate after tea, but eventually mishit one from St. John and was caught by Moir. He had played an excellent knock for 55 runs. The innings closed soon afterwards for a total of 167 runs. Freeman again bowled well for Metropolitan, although he was used sparingly, and St. John kept a good length to capture three wickets. Moir was the best of the slow bowlers tried, and none of the batsmen played him with confidence. Metropolitan required 79 runs in exactly an hour when Moir and Caradus opened, and 10 came off Becker’s first over, Moir scoring two boundaries to the on side. Moir had a “ life,’ in the next over when he returned one to Macassey, who dropped the easiest of catches. Moir was opening out in- fine style, and lifted Blakely into the stand for two 6’s off consecutive balls, 60 coming up in 28 minutes. He was dropped ? n more occasions, but continued to hit the bowling to all corners of the field, and the necessary runs were made with 20 minutes to spare.. Caradus was caught and bowled by McAtamney for 18, and Moir finished with 65 not out, an excellent performance. Scores: Maniototo ‘.
