STOWAWAY WIFE
DISCOVERED IN MONTEREY AMERICAN “BRIDE SHIPS” SYDNEY, Feb. 18. Only one woman got beyond the wharf gates in an attempt to stowaway in the Monterey, which is to take Australian wives of American servicemen to the United States. She got on board with her luggage yesterday afternoon, but was discovered in the vaccination queue. Several other brides without passages were caught at the wharf gates. Of 811 brides and children due to sail, only one failed to arrive. A special train, the “ Perth Perambulator,” brought 305 wives and 131 babies to •* the ship. One husband discharged from the army took a job as a steward on the Monterey, and finds that his wife and child are allocated to the ship. The accommodation is comfortable, the nearest to overcrowding being six women and children in a 12-berth cabin. . , , . At Brisbane, the Mariposa is taking aboard 833 brides and babies, and is due to sail on Wednesday. The ship arrived here yesterday. More than 2500 wives, widows, and fiancees of Australian ex-servicemen are awaiting passages in the United Kingdom, and so far only 100 berths have been made available this month.
