Mr J. L. Passmore was a passenger by the express for the north yesterday. Messrs E. C. Hazlett, J. M. Paterson, G. W. Reid, and J. S. Jack left yesterday on a visit to the West Coast. Sir James Fletcher left for Christchurch yesterday. He will return to Dunedin on Monday. Mr Edmund J. Smith left yesterday morning for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Dominion Executive of the National Party. Mr Gilbert McKay, of Hastings, formerly of Balclutha, is visiting the south, and is at present staying with his sister, Mrs H. Dunbar, 95 Forth street, Dunedin. Prior to his departure for Nelson, Mr G. E. Burridge, of the mail room staff of the Chief Post Office, was met by his fellow officers and was presented with a reading lamp as a token of the esteem in which he was held. The presentation was made by the chief postmaster (Mr E. J. Smith). Eulogistic reference to the manner in which the lime rationing administrator, Mr S. D. Blomfield, of the Department of Agriculture at Gore, had carried out • an onerous task during a difficult period was made at a recent meeting of representatives of the primary production councils, lime companies, and merchants throughout Otago and Southland. In reply, Mr Blomfield expressed thanks to the farmers, lime' companies, and merchants for their co-operation which, he said, had ensured the success of the scheme.
Mr D. W. Stewart, until recently resident engineer at Waipori Falls for the Electricity Department, was yesterday presented by the staff on his retirement with a well-filled wallet. Making the presentation, Mr G. E. Edgar mentioned that Mr Stewart commenced with the department at the Halfway Bush substation in 1908, and was transferred to Waipori Falls in_ 1909. He attained the position of resident engineer in 1921. During his period of service Mr Stewart has seen the plant extended from 2000 kw. to 24,000 kw. capacity, together with the building of dams, tunnels, etc. He carried with him the best wishes of all the employees of the department. Other members of the staff added their appreciation of Mr Stewart, after which he suitably replied. Passengers who left for the north by air yesterday were: Mr J. B. Kent, Mr A. E. Mills for Christchurch; Mr J. Esdale, Mr A. T. Haddon, Mr Smith, Mrs T. B. Herdson, Mr K. Gallacher, for Wellington; Mrs M. Black, Mrs S. Tindle, Mrs A. O. Davies for Auckland. Passengers from the noi’th were: Mrs J. Ireland, Mrs H. Selby, Mr H. Selby from Auckland; Mr S. D. MacPherson, Archdeacon Rich, Mr R. Bathurst, Mr A. L. Cassie, Mr H. Duff from Wellington; Mr J. Ryan, Mrs A. Brady from Christchurch. Passengers for the south were: Mr H. Selby, Mr E. Selby, Mr D. Tunnicliffe, Mr A. Howorth, Mrs J. Ireland.
