MIDDLEMARCH

SOLDIERS WELCOMED On Friday of last week Messrs Greig Pedofskv, Alister Keast, Elliott Howell and Henry Kidd, who have recently returned from service overseas, were the guests of honour at a welcome home social in the A and P. Hall Mr G. S. Gillespie, vice-president of the Soldiers Farewell and Reception Committee, presided. Welcoming the men, he congratulated them or. their safe return and the services tnev had rendered overseas, and he hoped they would soon be settled in civi’ian life. Each of the guests suitably ieplied, and expressed their appreciation of me various local organisations which had sent parcels and letters to them while overseas. During the evening vocal items were contributed by Mrs W. Robertson (Merton Mains), Misses M. and is. Tisdall and Mr J. A. Jones. After suppei a dance was held. STItATH-JCAIERI COLLIE CLUB The Collie Club, which has not operated during the war period, has commenced preparations for holding the annual trials. A meeting of all interested in the revival of the club was held on Friday evening. There was a good attendance of supporters, and Mr M A Matheson presided. It was decided to'hold the trials this year, and t. O application to the Otago Provincial Sheep Dog Association for a suitable date. THE WEATHER The weather for the past three weeks has been a complete change from that experienced during the earlier part of the year. There has been practically no rain, and with a continuation of very warm and often windy days the distnct is now presenting a very dry appearance. Although feed is still plentiful, it is beginning to burn up badly, especially on the lighter lands, and a good rain is needed. With the exceptional growth of grass during the summer, there will be a great risk of grass fires if rain does not Ct Janua°y n ' particularly. in the early part, was a wet month. Ram fell on 13 days, with a total of 3.07 inches, compared with 3,46 inches for the same month in 1945.
