UNUSUAL ROLE
NEW ZEALANDER IN PALESTINE (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Feb. 14. A conspicuous arrival among the passengers by the Rangitiki to-day was Sergeant N. G. Davidson, who wore across the shoulders of his militaryuniform the title “ Palestine Police.” He is a New Zealander from Te Horo who had been waiting for nine months at Suez for a well-earned five months of furlough here after joining in 1938. His force must be distinguished from the Palestine police who are Arabs. Part of the time he is on C.I.D. duties in Jerusalem necessitating the use of three languages—English, Hebrew and Arabic. He said the police had their hands full in Palestine because they were understaffed and the place was full of terrorist activity. When asked if the outbreaks were sponsored by the people themselves or bands of extremists. Sergeant Davidson said it was ostensibly the extremists, but he would not’comment further.
