INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC

MANY DEATHS IN BRITAIN NOT REPETITION OF 1918-19 (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 12. The wave of influenza in Britain has resulted in 297 deaths for the week ended February 2, compared with 273 the previous week. It is emphasised that there is nothing to suggest a repetition of the 1918-19 epidemic. The present wave is reported to be due to Virus B, which caused the outbreak in 1943. Penicillin and sulphonomide drugs although having no effect on the influenza virus, are being used to combat the complication of pneumonia.
