CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The weekly meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday. With reference to a letter from the City of Dunedin Development Council, it was decided to write to the Minister of Health, Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, expressing the pleasure of the chamber that if a second school for hotel workers is to be opened in the Dominion, Dunedin will be the location chosen. At the request of the Federation of Labour, to which a copy of the report of the Industrial Relations Committee had been furnished, it was decided that the special committee of the chamber should meet the executive of the Federation of Labour to discuss the report. The following reply was received by the chamber in answer to the telegram sent to the Minister of Internal Affairs protesting against the non-inclusion of Dunedin in the projected tour of Lord Mountbatten. “In the absence from Wellington of the Minister I h'ave to acknowledge receipt of your telegram. No itinerary has yet been fixed lor Lord Louis Mountbatten. Your representations noted with others for consideration in the light of Lord Mountbatten's very brief stay in New Zealand.—Heenan, Under-secretary.” The following recommendations of the Transport and Tourist Committee of the chamber were adopted:—(l) That the City Council be asked to provide at the tramway shelter at the Stock Exchange a plan of the city with directions to the principal places of interest for the convenience of visitors to Dunedin, and indicating the trams, etc., to be taken to reach such places. (2) That the City of Dunedin Development Council be asked to prepare an attractive printed card to be issued to hotels for the convenience of visitors, also that the council publish and issue to hotels small printed folders for the benefit of visitors, referring to the principal places of interest in and around the city. It was decided to arrange lor a luncheon meeting of members on Monday, March 11, to hear an address by Mr A. O. Heany, of Wellington, who is making a visit to all constituent chambers. The following replies were received by the chamber in response to telegrams sent to the Minister of Defence, Mr F. Jones..and the Associated Chambers of Commerce regarding the small amount of Otago fruit being shipped to the North Island:—“ Your telegram in regard to the shipping from Lyttelton of Central Otago fruit received. Have been pleased to make early representations on your behalf to the Minister.—F. Jones.” The Associated Chambers of Commerce replied: “ Your telegram regarding the quantities of Otago fruit permitted to be shipped from Lyttelton to Wellington has been discussed with the Shipping Controller, who is, we are advised, the responsible officer in this matter. The Shipping Controller informs us that loaciing at Lyttelton of perishable goods for the North Island commences early in the afternoon, approximately 1 p.m. • Labour for loading vessels is not available after 5 p.m. It has been agreed, in response to representations already made, that 3500 cases per day will be shipped from the Otago growers. if this quantity is available. The Shipping Controller understands that this represents the maximum likely to be available for shipment. He‘will be glad, however, to consider any representations which may be thought desirable to ship increased quantities of fruit over and above 3500 cases.”
