DAVIS CUP CONTESTS
AUSTRALIA’S PROSPECTS (Rec. 7.50 p.m.) NEW YORK, Jan. 7. Bitsy.Grant, the veteran lawn tennis star, who has been demobilised after four years’ service in the army, said that Australia was certain to retain the Davis Cup in 1946, and perhaps for -two or three years more. “I am not discrediting our boys when I say this,” he stated. “ but they are not good enough to lick players like Quist, Bromwich, and Pails.” Grant was stationed in Australia when he first went overseas, and played against Crawford, and saw Bromwich, Quist and Pails in action.
DOUBLES RANKING LADDER
The Otago Lawn Tennis Association has issued the following doubles ranking ladder, and challenges may be placed with the secretary of the association:—(l) Robson and Sincock; (2) Robertson and Cameron; (3) Laidlaw and Radcliff; (4) Edmonds and Rudkins; (5) Hutton and Jackson; (6) Mackinnon and Whittleston. Challenges may be issued against the pair immediately preceding, or by pairs at present not ranked against the last ranked combination.
