SURVEY FLIGHT
PAN-AMERICAN AIRWAYS AUCKLAND-SAN FRANCISCO SERVICE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. One of Pan-American Airways large four-engined landplanes, which is making a survey flight of the new Pacific route, is expected to land at Whanuapai towards the end of the week. The plane, which is believed to be a Skymaster capable of carrying 40 passengers, as well as mail and express freight, at a cruising speed of 200 miles an hour, left San Francisco on Sunday. Pan-American Airways officials in Auckland could not give any information about the flight, but it is believed that the route taken will be via Honolulu, Canton Island, Suva and Noumea. A fair amount of time will be taken in surveying the route and in making arrangements for future fuelling, maintenance and accommodation. According to a statement made tonight by Mr L. C. Reynolds, who controls the air line’s South Pacific division, the survey is preparatory to the resumption of a regular service between San Francisco and Auckland, which will start on February 1.
