“SMUGGLE ” GIRLS
RETURN DEMANDED ACTION BY AUSTRALIA (Rec. 8 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 7. The Commonwealth is understood to be demanding the return from Manila of the 15 Australian girls who were taken from Brisbane early last Wednesday morning by a United States Dakota aircraft, according to the Canberra correspondent of the Sydney Sun. The incident has now reached a diplomatic level and is being investigated by the head of the American Legation in Canberra, Mr John Minter, who has flown to Sydney to interrogate the American officers responsible. Colonel Jordan, commander of the United States airport at Eagle Farm, Brisbane, is understood to have been asked for a full statement. It is believed that the Commonwealth is seeking assurances from the United States Forces that there will be no repetition of such incidents, and that the girls will be returned without delay.
