PRINCE WILLIAM
FOURTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED On the occasion of his fourth birthday (says a Melbourne paper), Prince William was given a clockwork train by his father, the Duke of Gloucester. The Duke was kept busy for an hour laying out the railway system' on the floor of his study and winding up the train. There was also a tank, complete with caterpillar treads, the gift of Prince William s brother, Prince Richard. From his mother he received a set of wooden trucks, and from his grandmother, Queen Mary, some books and a modelling set. A delightful surprise was a three months’ old black lamb, christened Sambo, who arrived by car at Yarralumla on the morning of his birthday. Sambo was the gift of the official'secretary, Admiral Bracegirdle, and Mrs Bracegirdle, and was born on a station in the Canberra district, and secretly trained to become a Royal favourite. After being introduced to Sambo on the lawn, Prince William led him around on a leash until he found the lamb would come when called. Thereupon Sambo was unleashed, and given the freedom of Yarralumla. The Prince’s former playmates in the village of Barnwell. Northamptonshire, sent him small gifts, and there were also presents from members of the staff of Government House.
