SENTENCE REMITTED

THREE INDIAN OFFICERS MEMBERS OF NATIONAL ARMY (Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW DELHI, Jan. 3. General Sir Claud Auchinleck has remitted the sentence of transportation for life passed by court martial on three ex-officers of the Indian National Army, Captain . Shah NawazKhan, Captain Saighal and Lieutenant Dhillon, but confirmed the sentences of cashiering and forfeiture of arrears of pay and allowances. The officers were released and to-night visited Asaf Ali, a member of the Congress Working Committee, who was one of the defence counsel at the trial with other members of the Working Committee. A large crowd cheered and garlanded the released men as they left the building in which the meeting was held and hoisted them on top of a car Tor speeches. They said: “ Our release is a victory for the country. We gave a pledge that our lives were dedicated to the cause of India’s freedom. That pledge still stands.” The accused were charged with waging war against the King, murder, abetment in murder, and the causing of grievous harm to Indian soldiers by hanging them from a bar and beating them. They were alleged to have left the Indian Army and to have taken a prominent part in the formation under the Japanese of the Indian National Army, in which all three became colonels.
