It was a kindly thought that prompted the compilation of the namphlet Sketches from the Life of William Paterson, who was for 27 years secretary of the Otago Early Settlers’ Association. Mr Paterson was widely known \and respected by members of the association and also by the members of the general public who visited the association’s museum. All who made his acquaintance either as secretary or as an enthusiastic and well-informed guide to the treasures in his keeping will remember his unusual personality. Mr Paterson’s own memoirs are unfortunately brief, and most of his reminiscences are given, in. an informal manner in a letter which he had written to a friend. The Paterson family was well known in South Otago from 1864 onvvards, and residents of that district will be particularly interested in the names which are recalled. Mr Paterson’s interest in the prohibition movement in Clutha, which was the first electorate in New Zealand to carry no-licence, and his record as a lodge member are among the other items in the pamphlet, and there is also a brief memoir by his son, Mr W. Paterson. The pamphlet is obtainable from the Otago Early Settlers’ Association.
