THE RAINFALL The rainfall recorded in Balclutha tor December totalled 3,91 Inches, compared with a recording of 4.47 inches for December, 1944. Rain fell on 21 days, the highest recording being 0.88 inches on December 5. In 1944 there were 17 days on which rain fell. For the year 1945 there were 165 rain days, compared with 157 rain days in 1944. The total fall for 1945 was 29.17 inches, compared with 33.37 inches for .1944. VITAL STATISTICS Registrations in Balclutha for December are: Births 13, deaths 6, marriages 3. The figures for December, 1944, were, 8,7, and 6 respectively. For the year there were 158 births, 72 deaths, and 33 marriages, compared with 129 births, 72 deaths, and 40 marriages in 1944. It is interesting to record that the number of births in Balclutha (including those registered in other districts) totalled 202—a record. In 1944 the number of births was 163. * PERSONAL Sir Alfred Turnbull, who was created a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (K.8.E.) in the New Year Honours, was born in Balclutha, being a son of Mr John Turnbull, who was for many years manager of the Balclutha branch of the Bank of New Zealand. He received his education at the Balclutha District High School, under Mr W. McElrea, now resident in Dunedin. Sir Alfred recently retired from the position of Administrator of Samoa, where he had been stationed for the last 16 years. BOWLING Four members of the Balclutha Bowling Club—M. Campbell, R. Mcßride, JMcNamara, and L. J. Edwards —will be taking part in all sections at the Dominion bowling tournament, which will open at Christchurch on Tuesday.
