FEDERATED FARMERS

At the quarterly meeting of the Papakaio Federated Farmers Mr W. Doig (chairman) reviewed the conference held at Oamaru, and Mr W. S. Perry (Totara) reported on the small seeds conference held at Timaru. Mr Perry explained the procedure adopted by the Department of Agriculture to further the interests of the industry. . Members were particularly interested in the blind seed fungus, which is detrimental to the yield of ryegrass, and Mr Perry detailed the life cycle of the fungus and its destructive effect on ryegrass. The speaker stressed the fact that, in view of the wet season being favourable to the spread of the disease, farmers should take samples of seed heads and forward them to the seed testing station at Palmerston North for testing, before attempting to harvest.
