WAR-TIME LEADER
MR CHURCHILL’S AWARD CHORUS OF PRESS PRAISE (N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent) (Rec 7 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 1. The award of the Order of Merit to Mr Churchill was made the occasion by all newspapers to praise Britain’s war-time leader. It is recalled that he refused all other honours, including the Garter. The honour brings him into line with the other great war Prime Minister of modern times —the late Lord George. He. however, received the honour when he was still
Prime' Minister. Only one other statesman who has been Prime Minister has belonged to the Order. This was Mr A. J. (afterwards Earl) Balfour, who became O.M. in 1916. Lord Portal's accession to the company of the Order of Merit is regarded as a tribute to his superlative work as Chief of the Air Staff through very nearly five years of war. The R.A.F. now has two O.M. members, Sir Cyril Newall being the other, against the army’s one and the navy’s one—Lord Chetwode and Lord Chatfield. There was some surprise that Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Harris was not offered an honaur, but he received promotion. The Honours’ List is the longest in history. Another will be published on January 9.
