FRENCH SWIM SUIT
BAN ON APPEARANCE AT ORIENTAL BAY “The display of French swim suits in a Wellington shop window last month resulted in at least one inquiry being made from the Wellington City Council whether the suits would be permitted on Wellington beaches,” says the journal of the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation. “A Wellington girl received one of the suits from a friend in Sydney, and in exhibiting it to her boy friend he suggested that she should wear it at Oriental Bay. The girl agreed, provided he would accompany her and that he ascertained from the City Council whether the costumes were banned or not. “The boy duly inquired from the Citv Council authorities, who were rather dumbfounded at the request. They did not think that the costume would be allowed, but had not really had a ruling on the question. Not to be put off, the male enthusiast then rang the city solicitor. This legal gentleman did not mince matters in his reply: ‘ Of course they are banned. Just read the regulations.’ “The promised bathing party has not yet taken place, and for the time being it is the intention of the girl to keep the suit for display purposes only and in her own home. It is a source of interest to all her girl friends, but as yet she has not been brave enough to don the suit even for a private showing.”
