LOWER CLUTHA RIVER TRUST The monthly meeting of the Lower Clutha River Trust was attended by the chairman (Mr J. G. Weir) and Messrs I. Jenkins, S. Willocks, J. F. Bell, H. H. Lyall (secretary), and A. J. McD. Miller (engineer). The secretary presented the following financial statement for the period ended December 18:—Receipts: Petrol refund £25, rates £35 15s 4d, firewood £2 16s, drainage £5 ss, rent £5, balance £1928 18s 4d. Expenditure: Balance £1331 0s Id, drainage £9 10s 9d, river protection £24 13s 4d, interest £4l ss, river sprvey £6 3s« 6d, car expenses £3O 19s Bd, excavator expenses £33 2s 4d, flood damage £3 6s, petrol £7B 3s lOd, weed cutter £BS 14s, travelling expenses £4 18s, administration £2O 2s Id. truck expenses £6 3s 6d, wages £322 8s sd, hut £9. —The report was received, and accounts totalling £963 12s 7d passed for payment. Cleaning Puerua River

The clerk of the Clutha County Council wrote stating that, arising from the visit of a deputation from, the River Trust, the council had agreed to pay half the cost of cleaning the north bank of the Puerua River. The council desired the Puerua to be cleaned out as soon as possible, and also Requested the trust to take the necessary steps to have the Puerua brought under the trust’s control. —The engineer explained that at present the trust was responsible for the cleaning of the north bank, while the south bank was the council's responsibility. At present the Puerua was under the control of the County Council, but the trust would actually carry out the excavating and cleaning work for the council. —It was decided to proceed with the work shortly after the completion of the Waitepeka Stream job. Permission to take gravel from Lucas's Beach was sought by the Clutha County Council and granted. Mr G. McK. Barr, secretary of the South Molyneux Farmers’ Union, wrote stating that his branch desired river Ipanks patrolled when flooding was imminent. —After a lengthy discussion on the measures which were proposed as a result of the experience gained earlier this year, it was decided to write thanking the branch for its helpful interest. ~ Messrs Mosley Bros., Inch Clutha, wrote drawing attention to erosion on their property and at Storer s as a result of the floods early this year.— The engineer was asked to inspect and renort Mr D. V. Gale, Kaitangata, wrote asking for permission to drain water into a small creek. —Granted. . The engineer’s report was received. PRIMARY SCHOOL “BREAK-UP” Members of the School Committee and a few parents attended the breakup ” ceremony of the Balclutha School on Wednesday afternoon.. The dux medal was presented to Colin S. Smith by the chairman (Mr G. S. Fincham). A presentation to Mr A. Hall, headmaster, who will commence duty at the Waihopai School next year, was made on behalf of the pupils by Colin Smith and Miriam Maxwell (proxime accessit). Eacli child was presented with a bag of sweets by Mr and Mrs Fincham and afterwards the staff entertained the parents and members of the committee at afternoon tea.
