NOTES ON THE RUNNING

DECISIVE WIN IN JUVENILE HANDICAP When the field for the Otokia Hurdles raced past, the stands Banch was showing the way to Forage, Commemorate, Palpitate and The Raker. Sir Saladin and Kohara had lost ground. Banco and Forage lost place in the back stretch, where Commemorate and Robert were in charge and Sir Saladin was commencing to improve his position. He reached third place coming round the top. Robert and Commemorate led Sir Saladin into the straight. Both the leaders went for a flattened hurdle, and some crowding took place. Commemorate stalled off Robert and won by a neck. Sir Saladin was another length away third, followed by The Raker and Kohara. Endeavour Handicap Gold Song and Deficiency began well in the Endeavour Handicap, and led up the rise from Deep Harmony, Manatone, Rhine Lord and Merry Lancer. Salad put in a strong run in

the straight and won by a length from Deep Harmony. Eudora made up, ground to finish a close third, with Rhine Lord next. The two leaders dropped out in the run home. Milburn Handicap

In the Milburn Handicap On Silver, Nor'-wester. Bath Slipper and Silverstream got away slowly. The early leaders were Don’t Regret, Wantwood. Sunny Course, Montezuma and Rahiri. The order was much the same as they came round the home turn, where Turnstile had joined the leaders. Rahiri looked dangerous when up with the leaders, but he faded, and Sumra, coming with a late and well-sustained run. beat Montezuma by a length. Don't Regret was a head away third, and then came Wantwood, Denary, Sunny Course, Silverstream and Bath Slipper. Federal Handicap

Lisheen was made a slightly better favourite than Grand Forest for the Federal Handicap. They were both a bit slow off the mark,' and so was Sterling Lad. Lyndall also did not get away as smartly as usual. Powys, Loch Derg. Gold Spur and St. Nattar led over the first three furlongs, with Lisheen moving up. Lisheen was with the leaders at the turn for home, and once in the straight Grand Forest drew up on the rails. Lyndall was still well back in the field. Grand Forest and Lisheen fought out a good finish, and they could not be separated at the post. Sterling Lad was a length away, and Lyndall, with a late run, finished fourth. Dearo, Powys, Ring Chief and St. Nattar were next. Victory Handicap Amorlad and Pride of Mossburn were slow to move in the Victory Handicap, Night Robe, Good Cast, Great Coon, Silver Sal, and Joygiver was the order going along the back. Joygiver was under a good hold. Good Cast led to the far turn, in front of a bunched field, with Lance Wing improving his position. Good Cast led into the straight and kept on to win by a length from Lance Wing, who finished a short length in front of Benbecula. Great Coon was fourth and Joygiver was next. Good Cast won well, but the success was not devoid of the element of luck. Some interference took place in the final furlong, and Joygiver was sent back from a good position to the rear of the field, and Lance Wing also suffered. Great Coon was held to be the cause of the trouble, by interfering with Night Robe. An inquiry was held, and the interference was stated to be purely accidental. Juvenile Handicap Naughty Lady was made a strong order for the Juvenile Handicap, but was not seen in the race. She drew 7 at the barrier, and apparently suffered from some crowding. Cipher, from No. 12, soon drew clear of Prana, Stagestnlck, Lakhnau, and Faites vos Jeux. Stagestruck stayed on best and won by three-quarters of a length from Cipher, who beat Faites vos Jeux by two lengths. Lakhnau and Naughty Lady were next. Grandstand Handicap Gamble led out in the Grandstand Handicap from Kiloney and Aurora Australis, with Double Cross and Real Chase handy as they came round the top. When the field was well into the straight Double Cross was in charge, but Aurora Australis, under strong pressure, wore him down and won by three-quarters of a length. Real Chase was three lengths away, with Martial Note next, followed by Gamble and Foxhaven. Salisbury Handicap Western Front led all the way in the Salisbury Handicap, and, stalling off a strong challenge from Te Anau Lady, won by a head. Siegform was two lengths away third, and Thornbridge was next.,,. Gold Lance and Altruist lost.their riders at the home turn, and Chain broke a leg in the mix-up.
