HOLIDAY TRAVEL

PEAK EXPECTED ON MONDAY 6 FEWER LAST-MINUTE BOOKINGS Althougn the Christmas rush is not expected to reach its peak until Monday, -the Dunedin Railway Station has been extremely busy during the past few days. Trains both north and south have generally been filled to capacity, and the Central Otago line has also come in for its share of holiday patronage. •. More trains are running this Christmas than has been the case since 1940, and on present indications they will all be needed. Railway officials, however, are confident that all demands will be met with a minimum number of frayed tempers, and that with Monday’s rush over there will be no serious difficulties for the remainder of the holiday period. It is pointed out that there have been fewer last-minute bookings this year than for many years past. This, it is claimed, is due to the fact that intending travellers have been able to book a month ahead instead of only a week. As a result the public has been given extra time to arrange for accommodation, and the tram-running officials have also been enabled to make a more accurate estimate of each day’s traffic demands. The travel position has also been relieved by an unexpected factor, in that a surprisingly large number of bookings are reported to have been cancelled owing to the outbreak of measles.
