MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Clutha County Council was held at Balclutha on Tuesday afternoon, Mid w«ts attended by the chairman (Cr T. Jffatanness) and Crs C. F. Shaw, A. T. Karris, R. Brown, J. Burnett, A. V. King, J. W. Dunn, J. K Ross, B. ChittocS, and W. S. Thomson.

The clerk (Mr G. Ashcroft) presented the following report for fhe period ended December 18:—Receipts: Miscellaneous, £275 16s; dragline, £lB3 5s 10d; rent, £35 10s; sundry debtors, £1" ss; heavy traffic fees, £485 Is 2d; licences, £43 13s 6d; current ratgs, £439 15s 3d; arrears of rates, £B7 7S 7d; —total, £1551 14s ,4d. Expenditure: Roads and works, £1323 4s 6d; general expenses, £1612 9s 4d; special account, £l2 15s 7d; main highways, £428 14 s Id; dragline, £282 9s 7d; plant, £1424 17s lid; South Molyneux ferry, £59 14s 7d; sundry debtors, £l2 15s 4d; other expenses. £37 12s lid; wages (unallocated). £720 10s 7d; — total, £5915 4s sd.—The report was received, and accounts totalling £2315 Is 7d were passed for payment. The county ranger (Mr W.N. Taylor) reported having found wandering 3» cattle and 1 horse. —Received. Fires on County Roads Cr King asked if anything could b« done to prevent the public from setting fire to gorse on county roads. In his district a case had occurred recently in which, as the result of a fire started bv some irresponsible persons, a" farmer's boundary fence had been damaged—The clerk stated that it was an offence for anyone to light a fire on any road, and he was of the opinion that if the culprits in the case mentioned by Cr King could be identified the farmer would have a good chance of recovering damages in a civil action. In reply to a request by Mi ,P. C. Sargeant. of Kaka Point, that broom and lupins at Mrs Hay’s corner be cut back, it was decided to have this done before the holidays. Mr G. E. Dodds, Anise Hill, Clinton, wrote stating that the road to his property was in a deplorable condition, and asking that it be given attention before next winter.—The chairman and Cr Harris were empowered to inspect the road and take such action as they deemed necessary. It was decided to nominate Mr D. H. Cockburn (Lake County), the present representative, as the Otago counties’ representative on the executive of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association. The Nuggets Road A petition was received from nine ratepayers from Karoro Greek and the Nuggets requesting improvements to the Nuggets road from Erlstoke bluegums to Campbell’s Point. Land for the improvements was offered free of cost by the petitioners provided the council undertook to repair fences and amend the title deeds.—lt was decided to receive the petition, and to : reply stating that the council saw no reason to alter its previous decision to proceed with the new deviation. The engineer (Mr A. C. McLay) submitted a list of county bridges which would require renewal within' two years. Councillors expressed the view that the most urgent work was • the renewal of Forsyth’s bridge, which would be 64 feet in length, with a 12-foot roadway and reinforced concrete piers and abutments and hardwood stringers and deck. The estimated cost was £9OO. —It was decided to proceed with the construction of this bridge as soon as materials were available. . The engineer’s and the overseer s reports were received.
