GENERAL HURLEY

“BACKED THE WRONG HORSE” (Rec. 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Dec. 15. General Hurley caused the removal of General Stilwell from China, and also brought about the resignation of Mr C. E. Gauss as Ambassador, said Representative Hugh De Lacy in a broadcast. He claimed that General Stilwell had nearly achieved military unity in China when General Chiang Kai-shek demanded his removal. “This is when General Hurley first entered the act. He backed Chiang instead of backing General Stilwell, and saw that General Stilwell was removed. General Hurley next moved into the diplomatic arena, when Mr Gauss, who knew and understood China, had been working for unity and democracy. General Hurley brought the Chinese Communists and Chiang together, but, because he told Chiang in advance that he could write his own terms as he was offering United States aid, General Hurley destroyed Mr Gauss’s long work, and thus unity and the hope of democracy faded and Mr Gauss resigned. These are brutal facts which have led irrevocably to civil war in China.”
