STEEL-METAL WORKERS

NEW AWARD ISSUED A new award for tinsmiths, coppersmiths and sheet-metal workers in the Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago and Southland industrial districts has been issued by the Court of Arbitration. The main matters referred to the Court related to wages and classifications, wages for youths and deductions, overtime and meal money. The wage rates, which are subject to the Court’s two bonuses, range from 2s 8d to 3s Oid an hour. Slight adjustments have been made in the pay of boys and youths as set out in the previous award. An employer shall be entitled to make a rateable deduction from the weekly wages of boys and youths for any time lost through the worker’s own default or sickness or through accident. Rubber boots are to be provided for picklers, as well as a yearly issue of a rubber or leather apron or one set of overalls.
