MINEWORKERS’ CHARTER

INTERNATIONAL PRINCIPLES 1.L.0. COMMITTEE’S REPORT (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 11. The 1.L.0. Coalmines Committee completed its work, with the adoption of eight principles for an International Mineworkers’ Charter. They are: (1) Steady employment, assisted by stabilised production and the development of alternative uses for coal; (2) attractive wages, comparable with other industries, and adequate paid holiday’s; (3) working time in mines to be effectively less than in industry generally; (4) conditions conducive to safety, health, and comfort, and schemes for the prevention of accidents; workmen’s compensation; (5) social betterment; (6) adequate retiring allowances; (7) training courses; (8) co-operation, including collective bargaining, among the interests involved in the success of the industry The committee, in addition, set on foot a model code of safety and health and passed a resolution that an international economic agreement removing unfair competition between coalproducing countries would greatly facilitate a solution of the social problems of mining. The. decisions will be reported to to organisation governing body and then to Governments.
