NEW PROFESSOR
AUCKLAND CHAIR OF ECONOMICS FORMER OTAGO MAN’S POST (Special) AUCKLAND, Dec. 12. Mr C. G. F. Simkin, M.A., senior lecturer in economics at Canterbury University College, has been appointed professor of economics at Auckland University College. Mr Simkin will take up his new post next year. Mr Simkin, who is 30 years of age and married, was born in Dunedin and educated at Otago Boys’ High School and the University of Otago. In 1936 he graduated B.A. and gained a diploma of social science. In the same year he was awarded the senior scholarship of the University of New Zealand in economics and the Macandrew scholarship of the University of Otago in economics. In 1937 he obtained his M.A. degree with first-class honours in economics and was awarded the national research fellowship and the Sir Robert Stout research scholarship in economics. During 1937 and 1938 he was assistant lecturer in economics at the University of Otago, where he had charge of the course in accountancy economics. In 1939 he was appointed lecturer in economics at Canterbury University College and was promoted to senior lecturer in 1943. In 1939 the University Senate appointed him an examiner in economics for the University of New Zealand.
Mr Simkin was granted leave of absence from the university to enter the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1942 and served for over three years as a meteorological officer.
