CHRISTMAS MAILS

HEAVY POSTINGS RECORDED INCREASE ON LAST YEAR’S FIGURES The heavy postings that have been made at the chief post office during the past week or so, indicate that the figures for the forthcoming Christmas mails will be in excess of those for last year. , , The chief postmaster (Mr Ernest J. Smith) said yesterday that on Monday of last week 39,000 letters were posted at the chief post office alone, on the following Wednesday the total was 41,400, and last Monday 47,900 letters were posted during the day, which was 5600 more than the number of letters posted on the corresponding day of last year. The normal postings for a day were 30,000. On both Monday and Tuesday, it was found necessary to bring the morning staffs back in the afternoon in order to cope with the work.
