RANFURLY

CRICKET Fine weather prevailed on Saturday for the continuation of the Maniototo cricket competition. Excellent individual efforts were put up by J. D. Blakely playing for Patearoa B, who scored 141 (retired), his second century of the season, arid by L. L. Smith, playing for Naseby, who bowled 14 overs, 12 of which were maidens, for four wickets for 2 runs. Playing at Becks against Naseby, the home eleven batted first and with Clouston (30), Harrex (20), and Swinney (19 not out) being the top scorers, made the moderate total of 83. Bowling for Naseby Blackburn took five for 51 and L. L. Smith four for 2. Naseby replied with 86 to gain a narrow win (Smith 38. Klitcher 19 not out). For Backs Kane took three for 21, F. Mee two for 24 and ,T. Harrex two for 8. There was an exciting finish to the match played'at Patearoa between Oturehua and Patearoa B. Oturehua batted first and made a total of 154 (Becker 80, his score including four 6’s and four 4’s, Glover 18). For Patearoa the wickets ■were taken by McSkimming. three for 32, and H. Pearce, five for 56. When Patearoa B went.into bat there was only 90 minutes of play left, and it appeared that the game would end in a draw. J. D. Blakely, however, gave an excellent exhibition of batting, and Oturehua’s total was passed with seven minutes to spare. Blakelv then retired with his score at 141. At stumps Patearoa’s total was 168 for four wickets. Herlihy (12) was the only other batsman to reach double figures. Playing at Ranfurly,- Patearoa A and Ranfurly drew. This was the first match of the season to be played at Ranfurly where the outfield was heavy. Patearoa batted first and after a poor start J. Mathias (51) and I. Beattie (16) made a solid stand. Patearoa were eventually dismiss’d with less than an hour of play remaining for a total of 150. Other batsmen who reached double figures were W. McAtamney (29), B. Greer (21 not out) and S. Andrews (16). Bowling for Ranfurly. Macassev took two for 25, Briggs two for 29, Murray two for 0. and Ashby two for 3. When stumps were drawn Ranfurlv had two wickets down for 26. The draw for Saturday is as follows: Ranfurly v. Oturehua. Naseby v. Patearoa B, Patearoa A v. Becks. SCHOOL CRICKET In the cricket match played recently between the Naseby and Ranfurly Primary Schools, Ranfurly had a comfortable win. A feature of the game was the brilliant effort of Allen Blakely, of the Ranfurly eleven, who took four wickets with four consecutive balls.
