TRANSPORT COMMAND
REPATRIATION WORK THOUSANDS FROM FAR EAST (Rec. 9.15 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 2. To bring 10,000 troops and prisoners of war from the Far East back to Britain within four weeks is the biggest job R.A.F. Transport Command has yet tackled, says the Daily Express. The job began yesterday, when the first of 350 reconditioned converted fourengined bombers took off from English airfields. Many new crews were coopted to speed up the service. Each plane will take about a week to cover the 5000 miles from Britain to the main assembly points in India to which the men have been flown from South-East Asia Command bases. The air armada on its outward trip will carry replacement troops to fill the gaps caused by the thousands coming home. It is intended that the big lift shall continue until the end of the year, with an average of 10,000 members of the services being carried to and from Britain and the Far East every month.
